The presented project aims to face the challenge
'Acción sobre el cambio climático y eficiencia en la utilización
de recursos y materias primas' defined in the present call 'Programa Estatal
de I+D+i Orientada a los Retos de la Sociedad'. |
The starting hypothesis is that groundwater recharge will be
subjected to a significant reduction in the near future due to
climate change and intensive human activities like agriculture
and tourism leading to important social economic but also
ecologic hazards for the society. This is especially relevant
for regions with elevated water demand in close vicinity to
sensitive ecosystems such as the groundwater dependent wetland
of the Doñana National Park which is delimited by a belt of
intensive agricultural activity and tourism. |

Groundwater recharge is a complex process and
highly dependent on meteorological, hydrological and geological
parameters which are normally not measured and therefore
recharge estimations normally rely on rough estimates making
impossible a sound and sustainable management of water resources
to meet long-term social economic and ecologic demands. |
The overall aim is to study the impact of climate change on
groundwater resources in wetlands of the Doñana National Park.
General objectives to match this aim are the measurement and
estimation of groundwater recharge and their dependence on
meteorological, hydrogeological and soil parameters using
different methods and equipment. Recharge determinations will be
based on unsaturated and saturated zone studies using historical
data and an existing infrastructure of unsaturated zone
monitoring at different plots providing monitored data during 4
hydrological years. |

The recharge estimations and their
dependence on measured meteorological parameters will be used to
generate prognostic recharge time series based on temperature
and precipitation data simulated by Climatic Models. The impact
of the prognosticated changes of recharge on groundwater
resources and selected surface water levels will be studied
based on numerical groundwater flow models at different spatio-temporal
scales. Additionally, a cost-benefit analysis of measures to
minimize environmental impact of a potential decreasing
groundwater recharge will be performed. |
The internationalization of the monitoring results is another
general aim and will be performed by integration of the measured
data into the Singular Scientific and Technological
Infrastructure of Doñana Biological Station (DBS), the
responsible Institute for Research of the Spanish Council for
Scientific Research (CSIC) state in Seville. The ICTS is running
since 2006 and is a communication infrastructure providing
real-time access to the international scientific community to
the monitored data
